Participating in the Willi Hennig Conference |
Last July, I was fortunate to be one of the five students from Singapore to participate in the prestigious Willi Hennig conference held in Fagernes, Norway. This annual conference is attended by prominent members of the scientific community, especially within my discipline of evolutionary biology and phylogenetics. Besides hosting talks by acclaimed scientists and well known researchers from this field, the Willi Hennig Society also encourages students to present their own research to an international audience. I had the opportunity to mingle and meet peers from countries such as France, Argentina, Sweden, Norway, Africa and also the United States.

The SIET-NUSTLS Tuition programme is a commendable effort that attempts to fill a gap where provision of support in education to Indians is concerned, in particular, at the pre-university stage. It certainly will ensure that the pool of Indians proceeding to tertiary institutions is widened, which in doing so will enhance the economic capacity and capability of the Indian community, and within the wider milieu, our contribution towards Singapore’s well being. Through this paper, I propose that we capitalize on this institutional relationship towards the realization of “moral contribution” by SIET beneficiaries, which in doing so, will also expand the ambit of SIET-NUSTLS. A photograph, A cabinet and a Future! |

Karyn Wang Final Year Student at Johns Hopkins University (USA) International Relations A framed photograph on the corner of a desk brightens up an otherwise ascetic office. It gives you immediate character insight and offers a visual summary of a person’s priorities. The photograph on my desk is one of Singapore’s Cabinet. In times of hardship or excess, the collage of portraits of the Ministers in our Cabinet spurs me to work harder. It directs my idealism. It is the reservoir of my reflection. But above all, it is my inspiration to enable more Singaporeans to share the unique opportunities that graduate education provides. Studying international relations at the Johns Hopkins University, one of the world’s leading graduate schools, is an unparalleled educational experience. |
